Taking Stock // March

As I mentioned in my last post, the weather has been super dreary in Victoria since the beginning of the year, which always succeeds in putting a damper on my mood. Thankfully, the weather forecast appears to include a lot more sunlight in the coming days, which will undoubtedly assist in making me feel more energized!

At the beginning of the month, I went to see the re-release of Sailor Moon R: The Movie with my friend Juhi. It was a surprising amount of fun! I was obsessed with that show when I was younger, so getting to revisit it was a blast. Juhi had never seen the original anime, so I gave her a brief rundown of it before the movie, and I think that she enjoyed it a lot too. There were quite a few people dressed up at our showing, and it was really neat to see parents there with their kids, who passed down their love of Sailor Moon.

One of my favourite things about March – Saint Patrick’s Day – always warrants a party, and what better place to have one than at an O’Leary’s? Tapping into my Irish roots, I consumed a bit more alcohol than I had originally intended, and stayed up much later than anticipated. Thankfully, I was going out for brunch the following day. Nevertheless, O’Leary’s Saint Patrick’s Day parties are always the right side of fantastic. I don’t need much more on that day other than friends and a few good drinks. Although it has helped in recent years with Matt bringing along his violin and playing some fiddle music!

After a day of particularly feeling disgusting after eating far too many carbs and sweets, I resolved to eat better. I’ve been trying to lose roughly 20 pounds for a little over a year now. It’s not so much a vanity thing, I know that I’m beautiful no matter what, but I’m tired of feeling the way the I do. A couple of extra pounds on a small frame makes a big difference. A lot of my clothes had stopped fitting properly, and I just wanted to start taking better care of myself. I don’t make it to the gym nearly as often as I life, and a healthy lifestyle begins with better eating anyway. Since the beginning of the year, I’ve lost five pounds! I’m looking forward to fitting into a dress I bought online a year ago that I’ve never been able to wear because it won’t fully zip up. #goals

For all the goodness during the month, March was unkind as well. I lost a friend and mentor far too soon and far too young. My heart aches for the family and friends that she left behind, and for the life cut short. It hardly seems fair that a woman who has always exemplified strength and kindness should leave us so soon. I can’t stop thinking about her young daughters, but I know that they inherited strength from their mother, and that despite their pain, they will be okay. I will miss you dearly, Deb.

Lately, I’m …

Cooking: vegetable curry with chickpeas. Adding chickpeas to most things has been a game changer!
Drinking: lots of tea, lots of water.
Reading: 99: Stories of the Game by Wayne Gretzky.
Watching: lots of hockey! The regular season is winding down and the playoffs are upon us, which means I’m about to go a bit more hockey crazy than usual.
Playing: The Trouble With Us by Marcus Marr & Chet Faker on repeat.
Wishing: for a few more hours in the day!
Enjoying: tangerines! So juicy and flavourful. They’re my go-to snack as of late instead of cookies.
Waiting: for our summer trip to arrive!
Liking: the sounds that the birds make first thing in the morning (though I wish that they wouldn’t make them so early).
Loving: yummy treats from Empire Donuts!
Hoping: that the sunshine continues for the foreseeable future!
Needing: a little bit more sleep.
Smelling: like Verbena Eau de Toilette from L’Occitane. This is my daily scent as of late.
Wearing: a pair of jeans that I haven’t been able to comfortably fit into for over a year!
Following: bullet journal accounts on Instagram in hopes of making my own both useful and aesthetically pleasing!
Opening: the windows to let some fresh air in.
Feeling: warm, and a little stressed.
